Meat overwrappers are used to wrap and protect meat, vegetables, fruits, and more. Overwrappers are named so ecause film is wrapped over the meat to protect it. Using tension, the operator pulls film over the meat and under the tray. The bottom of the package is mended together with a hot plate.
The meat film used on an overwrapper comes in multiple widths and thicknesses. The standard thickness is a 62 gauge meat film. For longer storage and bone-in meats, a thicker meat film up to 125 gauge may be ideal. Overwrapped meats in a thicker film can last for months in freezer storage and resist punctures.
Common Overwrapper Features
Manual meat overwrappers come with different features and designs. All overwrappers share some common features. The film dispenser is a common part all overwrappers have in common. Either an axle mount or roll mount film dispenser will be found on all overwrappers. A film cutoff is essential and found on all overwrappers. The film needs to be easily cut as needed. A stainless steel prep area is also found on all meat overwrappers.
The stainless steel is required for easy cleaning and sanitary reasons. The last common item that helps the meat film mend is a heat pad. The package is placed on the heat pad and the meat film mends together closing the package.
