Should you learn French or Portuguese? Which language is more useful? Are French and Portuguese similar? This article will answer all of these questions.
Both French and Portuguese are Romance languages so they are similar, because they share the same roots. A lot of Portuguese words are similar to French ones and vice versa. Unfortunately, pronunciation is different. Grammar rules are very similar. If you speak French, it should be relatively easy for you to learn Portuguese and vice versa.
Both French and Portuguese are popular languages but French is more popular. It’s the official language of 29 countries including France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Haiti and numerous African countries.
Portugal is spoken in Portugal and Brazil which has about 190 million inhabitants (France has only 65 million inhabitants). The Portuguese language is also the official language of such countries as Cape Verde, East Timor, Angola or Mozambique. Brazil is one of the most rapidly developing countries in the world. Being able to speak Brazilian Portuguese can greatly improve your competitiveness in the job market. On the other hand, France and Canada are already well-developed countries and if you know French, there are many more job opportunities for you.
Brazilian Portuguese differs from European Portuguese. French isn’t that different in various countries but there are also some regional variations. If you know standard French, you will be understood everywhere. If you know Brazilian Portuguese, it may be a little harder for you to communicate in Portugal and vice versa.
Both French and Portuguese aren’t that difficult to learn for English speakers. However, French is considered to be more difficult than Portuguese, because there are a lot of irregularities in spelling and grammar. On the other hand, if you know English, you already understand many French words, because a lot of words of the English language are of French origin.
If you want to make the right decision, take into consideration your location and your traveling plans. For example, if you live in Canada, it’s definitely better to learn French. If you want to move or travel to Brazil, Portuguese is a must.
In the end, you can always try both languages and find out which one you like more. Good luck and have fun while learning!
