The UK is challenged with the likelihood of huge losses if international student admissions drop as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Britain may look at attracting the enormous student population that will be impacted by Donald Trump’s ruling to not permit international students pursuing online only classes to stay in the United States. Former minister Jo Johnson tweeted that England should think about an ‘emergency scheme’ to allow students impacted by this to move to UK universities if they meet the obligated criteria.
The UK is presently faced with the possibility of huge losses if foreign student admissions drop due to the Covid19 pandemic. The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) stated that continuing losses for the UK’s higher education sector could come in anywhere between 3 billion pounds and 19 billion pounds, mainly as a result of a decrease in foreign student admissions.
The IFS report stated around 13 UK universities which have a greater majority of foreign national students could close down without a bailout from the UK government.
The UK has also lately updated its rules and regulations to allow students to spend more time in the UK after they finish their degree. Under the new Graduate Route, foreign national students who complete their PhD in 2021 or after, can remain in the country for three years, while undergraduate and Master’s degree holders can remain for another two years. They can shift to skilled work once they obtain suitable job. Right now, foreign national students can only remain in the country for four months after they graduate.
In the meantime, the US Department of Homeland Security explained that students commencing a mix of online and offline classes would still be greeted in the country.
While other countries have so far not made any statements specific to this event, Australia stated last week that it would begin accepting foreign national students to come back to the country without stating a fixed timeline for their return. Canada, which remains to process student visas stated that it would permit students to pursue their degree programs online and remain entitled for a post-graduation work permit.
