Non-EU spouses of British citizens in visa limbo due to job cuts and furloughs

Spouse Visa applicants worry that they will not meet income limit due to the economic influence of Covid-19.

British citizens who have spent months separately from their non-EU spouses have uttered worries that their disconnection will become everlasting as mass unemployment and furloughing because of the Covid-19 pandemic could leave them unentitled for the visas.

Previously, in reply to a written parliamentary question about whether the United Kingdom Home Office had reflected stopping the minimum income requirement for spouse visas during the Covid-19 pandemic, Kevin Foster, the United Kingdom immigration minister stated that there were “a number of ways” to fulfil the £18,600 salary limit. He implied “income from the couple’s investments, property rental or pension may also be taken into account, together with their cash savings.”

Representative from the campaign group Reunite Families UK, Caroline Coombs, said these proposals by the immigration minister were “absurd”.

She stated that “It’s like fighting Goliath, honestly. These are the spouses and children of British citizens. The disturbance of forced separation, mainly during a global epidemic, is extremely demanding – and what’s crueler is, this is not leaving after lockdown.

“Public will not be able to get jobs, and for those who have succeeded to grip on to one, they are at present working crazy hours to try to meet the obligations for their husband or wife to be with them. Even then, most individuals still cannot put up the required funds. The United Kingdom Home Office needs to bring in a blanket period of time to lower the income obligations, or get rid of them completely.”

Nineteen overseas visa application centres are already reopened by the first week of June “where local restrictions allow”. But for spouses in countries where borders remain shut and flights grounded, the chances of a reunification in the near future seems doubtful.

A spokesperson from the United Kingdom Home Office stated that it had taken a “caring and practical tactic” to the spouse visa application process during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, “Family immigration obligations are being held under review, comprising the minimum income requirement, and we will issue further guidance soon. Some overseas visa application centres have resumed their services with social distancing in place, which means that passports can be returned and applicants can now provide biometric information or supporting documents for their applied visas.”
